Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced a new program to
promote the market for electric vehicles and to make electric vehicle
transportation more economically viable.
The Electric Vehicle-Enabling Technology Demonstration
Program will offer $2 million to fund research and projects. Gov. Cuomo’s
Charge NY initiative hopes to have 40,000 plug-in vehicles on the road and over
3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next five years.
Currently, there are about 640 public EV charging stations
in the state and around 5,000 electric vehicles; most of those are privately
owned.
“This program will focus on furthering research and
innovation related to EVs, so that we can make these vehicles more affordable
for New Yorkers, promote a cleaner transportation source, and make our
infrastructure more efficient, while also creating jobs in the clean energy
industry,” said Gov. Cuomo in a press release.
Universities, research centers, and technology-based
businesses will be targeted to help with research and development and will be
funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Cuomo
said.
The program plans to make electric vehicles more
cost-effective and feasible for long distance traveling for the consumer, Cuomo
said.
