South Africa Needs Regulatory Certainty to Build Large Wind Sector by 2050

Investors are looking beyond hiccups such as the stalling of the scheme to buy clean energy by the South African government from independent power producers to create a very large wind sector by 2050, but they want clear regulations.

The delays in signing off power purchase agreements by the power utility Eskom with renewable energy independent power producers (REIPP) has triggered panic signals to investors, but all hope is not lost to boost local manufacturing content and create jobs.

South Africa: Renewable energy umbrella launched

Four leading renewable energy associations have announced their intention to launch an umbrella body to act as a single voice championing the importance and relevance of the renewable energy industry in South Africa.

The announcement comes in the wake of the Green Economy Accord recently concluded through a series of engagements among the government, business, labour and community at Nedlac.

South Africa to cut emissions 34%

South Africa hopes to cut its carbon emissions 34 percent by 2020, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa says.

Building coal-fired power stations would not affect this, as cutting emissions did not happen in an instant, but required space and time, she told reporters in Pretoria.
