California Bills for Biogas

As part of the package of 19 clean energy bills that California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law on September 27, there are three in particular that will provide a boost to anaerobic digestion and biogas projects in the state.

The first of these, SB 1122, will require electric utilities to purchase in aggregate 250 MW of capacity from bioenergy projects that commence operation on or after June 1, 2013.

Environmental groups rally for NY ban on fracking

Health and environmental groups rallied at the Capitol on Monday to call for a legislative ban on hydraulic fracturing of natural gas wells, saying no amount of regulation can adequately safeguard water supplies from contamination.

"Fracking is the most important environmental issue this state has faced in the past 100 years," Sen. Tony Avella, sponsor of a bill to ban hydraulic fracturing, said at the rally in the Legislative Office Building next to the Capitol. "There is no possible regulation or series of regulations that can stop the one incident that pollutes our water supply for 1,000 years."

Cayman Islands: Committee shines light 
on National Energy Policy

If Wednesday’s presentation is any indication, then the National Energy Policy set to go before Cabinet in the first quarter of 2012 will address issues from the mundane to the ambitious – from building code revisions to goals for alternative energy production. Subcommittees formed in November 2010 will submit their draft reports to the National Energy Policy Committee in two weeks, with public consultation and policy implementation scheduled to take place next year.
