Rooftop solar in Thailand faces several challenges that have left the industry “largely untapped,” according to a recent report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

According to IRENA’s outlook for the country, the residential rooftop solar market has suffered the most, due to market dynamics that make installation unattractive to homeowners.

Myanmar, Thailand told to exploit more solar, wind resources

Myanmar is moving to exploit solar and wind energy, but experts said such attempts must be stepped up to smoothen the country’s development.

Soe Soe Ohn, director of the national electrification project at the Rural Development Department, said solar energy offered high potential particularly in rural electrification.

Some homes are equipped with solar panels and more are in the pipeline to increase off-grid supply.

More Clarity Needed on Alternative Energy Development in Thailand

Alternative energy development in Thailand is going to be in jeopardy if the government does not have clarity on what to promote, and how to do so.

About 50 biomass power plants are the hardest hit because they are in areas where there are no transmission lines could betray the government's lack of consistency and clarity in its policy. The investors said the state authority had stopped buying electricity from biomass power plants for two years.

Thailand energy policy: three-in-one master plan almost done

The government is about to complete the first national energy master plan, which will incorporate three existing energy-related plans.

Sittichod Wantawin, the director of energy conservation and renewable energy policy under the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO), says the new energy development plan will incorporate the power development plan (PDP), the renewable energy development plan (REDP) and the energy conservation plan into a single development plan.
