Can California Really Meet its 100% Clean Energy Target?


California is a global leader in climate policy, and its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045 is now law in the 5th largest economy after China, the US, Japan and Germany.

While the state has had a cap and trade program in place since 2013, it has been the simplicity and directness of a mandate that has most certainly reduced its carbon emissions as the percentage of renewable energy has risen from almost nothing eight years ago to 40% in 2018, more than beating its 2020 target of 33% by two years.

Australia Needs a Fresh Start on Climate Policy: Authority

Australia needs to “reset” discussions related to climate policy, according to the government’s advisory body on climate policy. The Climate Change Authority makes the argument in the second draft report of its special review on policy.

In a statement released today, acting chair Stuart Allinson said, “it is time for a fresh look at the range of policy options… with a view to ‘resetting’ Australia’s public discussion”.

China's Renewables to 'Hit 20% by 2020'

China’s renewable energy capacity increased from 27.8 Gigawatts (GW) in 2001 to 183 GW in 2013, and alternative sources are expected to account for more than 20% of the country’s total electricity generation by 2020, says research and consulting firm GlobalData.

When President Obama unveils his climate policy proposal in the coming days, he should focus on the one key element of successful climate and energy policy.  It’s not about utilities or incentives or numbers, it’s about ownership.

Climate-protecting energy policy succeeds when communities can keep their energy dollars local by directly owning and profiting from investments in renewable energy.
