Solar Advocates in Maine Get Reprieve From Controversial Rule in Advance of Lawsuit Ruling

Maine’s rooftop solar installers won a four-month reprieve Tuesday when the Maine Public Utilities Commission voted to delay implementation of a rule on how people who install new systems next year will be compensated for electricity they feed into the grid.

The current net-metering rule requires utilities to pay small energy generators the full retail price for the electricity they send into the grid. But under the new rule, systems installed after Dec. 31 would have seen the credit on their electric bills reduced over time.

There will be a phenomenal growth in power generation from renewable sources of energy once the regulations on consumer’s electricity sale to distribution companies get in place, a company’s senior executive said.  

“The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has already approved net metering regulations, but the distribution companies have some reservations over them and the law has not been implemented,” Chief Executive Officer Inam-ur-Rehman at Reon Energy, a leading solar solutions provider in Pakistan, told The News.

Advocates Back Bill to Prevent Limits on Reimbursements for Alternative Energy in Pennsylvania

Advocates of turning cow manure and other waste into energy are backing a bill introduced in the Pennsylvania House that would forbid putting caps on how much electricity those systems can sell to the grid.

The bill is aimed at a proposal still being developed by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission meant to limit reimbursements to customers who generate power from alternative sources — a dairy farmer with a methane digester, for example, or a homeowner with solar panels on the roof.

The House Bill, H7592 was introduced by Representatives Gallison, Malik, Morrison, Edwards, and Handy on February 16, 2012.

The Senate Bill 2870 is sponsored by Senator Lou De Palma, with the support of Senators Paiva-Weed and Chris Ottiano. It has been deemed to be a "dangerous" bill by Rhode Island Statewide Coalition, is too far-reaching, and has too much power. It is another Deepwater Wind, but far worse due to the power of eminent domain!
